Effects of Gums on Oil Refining

During deodorization, high temperatures may cause gums to carbonize, which can darken the oil and reduce hydrogenation efficiency. Therefore, crude oil is typically degummed before further refining.
During bleaching, gums may block part of the active surface of the bleaching agent, reducing bleaching efficiency.
During alkali refining, gums can cause excessive emulsification, making it difficult to separate oil from soapstock.
